Famine

(Spiritual Famine)

Amos 8: 11 —  Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord God.

Chance: When we think of famine we mainly think of the lack of food and hunger. And yes, famine in general always means no food available (lack of food). Even in religion famine means lack of food, but also, there is an esoteric meaning for the word famine. Famine esoterically speaking symbolizes spiritual famine and this spiritual famine means lack of understanding and hearing God’s holy word.

Notice carefully in Amos 8:11 the nature of this famine. This famine is not a lack of God’s word, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord God. This means that the people are deaf to the words of God. And when people are spiritually deaf they cannot understand the word of God. These people hear the word of God being taught but do not understand the holy word. So the condition describe is that of being spiritually deaf. God is not withholding his word and revelation from the people but the people are spiritually deaf.

So they do not hear and understand his word and revelation.
Now many people hear the word of God but the problem is that they don’t understand it. So in Amos 8:11 the people hear the word of God but do not understand it – so even though they hear it it’s as though they did not hear it because they do not understand it.

Jesus spoke of this spiritual deafness and spiritual blindness.

Matthew 13th chapter verses 9 – 17

13:9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why do you speak to them in parables?
13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
13:12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which says, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
13:17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

So as we can see from the words of Jesus, the spiritual deafness and spiritual blindness that afflicted the people of his time was due to the people’s hearts becoming too gross. The words of Jesus are very important here. Because Jesus was teaching his disciples the esoteric side of Judaism.

That why Jesus said 13:11 He answered and said unto them, because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. If Jesus was teaching the regular basic teachings of Judaism then the people would have understood, because they had been taught the basic teachings and rituals of Judaism by their Rabbis and priests. This means that Jesus was teaching the esoteric side of Judaism, and this is why the people did not understand, because their rabbis had not taught them the esoteric hidden interpretations of Judaism. When a person has been taught the esoteric teachings of their particular religion then they will understand the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.

The same is true in Amos 8:11 it is the esoteric interpretations and (secret and hidden) teachings that the people don’t understand even though they hear. This Amos 8:11 applies to our day and time when we look at the religious people of today – we can clearly see that they are spiritually deaf and spiritually blind. And, even doing Jesus’ time themselves people were abundant. Too many religious leaders of the church today hold back the members. They are like the scribes and Pharisees during the time of Jesus. They take advantage of the people by using various psychological methods.

Many people in church members and society see the constant flaws that many pastors, preachers, evangelists, and religious ministers display in public. And this makes many people not want join the church. Sexual misconduct, stealing money, negative behavior, trying to scare people into believing they are going to Hell so they can take advantage of the church members fear, using their positions to gain political favors and political power, etc many religious leaders display these qualities.

Also, too many of the religious leaders of today are involved in politics and this creates trouble also. Because in politics politicians in general operate by a ceratin set of rules that are not compatible with religious moral standards.

They lead their congregation strait to the door way of hell, the spiritually blind religious leaders leading the spiritually blind congregation, the spiritually deaf leading the spiritually deaf congregation.

And when certain individuals, who are more advanced reveal that they understand the esoteric interpretations of Christianity or any other religion the religious leaders label them heretics and fakes.

Now of course there are some good religious leaders but there are some bad ones too.

The church is not as influential in the life of the average person like it use to be. It has lost a lot of its moral authority due to the behavior of certain religious leaders and certain church members.

The esoteric teachings will become more and more accepted in the future, and these esoteric teachings will replace the church of today.

The famine in our current time is a spiritual famine.
