What Keke said

By Chance Kelsey, chancellorfiles.com

R&B singer Keke Wyatt has generated some controversy regarding her comments to essence magazine (essence.com). Keke said that her white mother frequently used the word nigger towards her and her brother. Keke also acknowledges that she is biracial, many blacks are angry that Keke views herself only as part black but not fully.

Many Blacks all over the Internet at various website forums, and blogs are saying that Keke is simply black. So therefore, this means that blacks are putting the ODR (one drop rule) on Keke, this the one drop blood rule that says if you have one drop of black blood in you then you are black is still a problem in America.  In 1967 the Supreme court removed the one drop blood rule from the law books. Keke is not black, Keke is mixed race and bi racial.

K.W.: People always say I look really different in person and ask, “What are you mixed with?” Then when I tell them they say, “I thought you were all Black!” I get that a lot because my mother is Caucasian and my father is Indian and Black.

Essence.com: Do you identify as a Black woman?

K.W.: I am a woman. I ain’t like Tiger Woods. The truth is I’m 25 percent Black. I claim to be Black, Indian and I claim to be White. I’m all of it. If you ask me, “What are you?” I’m going to say, “I’m a woman.” I stand up for all women. I don’t care if you’re Black, White, Chinese, whatever. I don’t know what my mama put on my birth certificate…. (Laughs)

Essence.com: So did your mom ever discuss race with you?

K.W.: I know when I was a little girl she would never let me and my brother watch movies that criticized Black people or where White people treated Black people really disgusting, like Roots. She didn’t want us to see how White people treated Black people because she probably thought we might start hating White people.

Essence.com: Was she afraid of how you and your brothers might perceive her?

K.W.: I used to tell her we’re not blind to the fact because we’re sitting there listening to people call her a “n—– lover” or accusing my daddy of being a “sell out” because he’s with a White chick. I told her she didn’t have to hide that stuff from us because we did see and hear about it, and kids did treat us differently. Essence.com: Did she ever talk to you about the N-word?

K.W.: My mom was raised around African-American people all her life. She can cornrow and everything. All she knows is the African-American way of living, because her stepfather was Black and she was raised by his family. She will use the N-word like it’s going out of style. I say, “Mama you can’t just go around using the N-word,” and she’s like, “I don’t give a damn. I say what I want to say. N—a ain’t no color, it’s an ignorant person.” Essence.com: But that word is still synonymous with Black folk. So you couldn’t watch Roots, but she used the N-word around you and your siblings?

K.W.: No, she doesn’t say “n—er,” she says “n—a” and says it in front of everybody, every day. She has always said it since I was a little girl. Hell, I thought my name was “n—er” for a long time. We never thought about it being a bad word.

Essence.com: Wow. So she didn’t want you to watch Roots, but she referred to you and your brother with the N-word? Do you think it’s time for her to stop using it?

K.W.: People should feel free to say what they want to say as long as they don’t use it to hurt other people. I don’t think “n—a” is a bad word. I don’t think it’s directed toward people of color. Now, the word “n—er,” if you call me that, I will kick your a– because now you’re trying to be nasty and hurt my feelings. It depends on how you’re using it.

Essence.com: But do you really think it’s enough of a distinction between the two to make exceptions?

K.W.: Yes, because back in the day they were saying it with the “er” on the end. I think it’s just like saying Negro, because the word in the dictionary it means “ignorant person.”

Essence.com: Yes, and many people still believe that “ignorant people” equals “Black people.”

K.W.: At the end of the day, you’re the one who is ignorant. I don’t think people should use the word so much. I hate how everyone thinks that Black people are beneath them, even Asians, Whites and …Mexicans. No, I’m not all Black, but I definitely stand up for the Black people. They’ve had it rough, they can’t help the fact that they’re skin is dark, or that their nose is a lil’ wider or that the curls in their hair might be tighter than yours. I don’t think that it’s fair for people who look like me with the light skin, pointy nose and the pretty hair to think that dark-complected people are any less than them. Who am I?

I’m not better than you. I breathe the same air and I bleed the same blood. Nobody is better than anybody else. We are all in this struggle called life. I think brown skin is beautiful because people like me have to lay out in the sun to try and look like you. My best friends are Black—Black-Black—and I think that’s so beautiful. I think that’s why I decided to make my children Black. I could have married a White dude or got with a White man and my kids probably would have looked completely White. That’s not what I wanted. Now, they can go outside and get a for-real tan (laughs). I think Black is beautiful. I stand for the African-American people until the day I die.

  1. Elle

I don’t understand what was wrong with what she said. She said black is beautiful and that her very own children are black- deliberately black. Black people need to get off of their soapbox about the word nigger. It’s no different from the word bitch or the word fag. Black people just want to be pampered, which is reason #458 to assimilate. If they didn’t lecture their kids and tell them that the word nigger, or should I say “the n-word”, is the worst thing you can say and is so horrible, their kids wouldn’t find it so hurtful. I’ve been called a nigger by racist whites and it rolled right off my back, because I was taught not to let it bother me. Her mom is right on for not being intimidated by black people. It’s free speech.

Black people forcing mulattos to be black is pathetic. You don’t see gays forcing bisexuals to be gay, or atheists forcing agnostics to be atheist. Just let people live.

  2. Le Chef

    Right on, Elle.

  3. Chef

U know y’all, it’s shit like this [& the sexual genetics piece] that makes dudes like me become Separatists.

    My response:
That is a good point Elle, you are right I wish that blacks would just let people chose how to identify ethnicity wise without yelling at them you are black and are not going nowhere (leaving the black race). I mean freedom to choose is what mulattoes and blacks fought for during the civil right movement. Now we have it and certain blacks don’t want to allow other the right to choose. This is a type of hypocrisy, whites let whites who have native American in them claim to be naive American, and even allow them to go live on reservations like a native Americans. Blacks need to become the same way.

Chef said: U know y’all, it’s shit like this [& the sexual genetics piece] that makes dudes like me become Separatists.

my response: I understand where you are coming from on that, because sometimes you just want to get away from all of the white and black racial conflicts, and you want to get away from the ODR (one drop rule). You just want to be yourself the mulatto and nothing more and that is not a lot to ask for.

    You’re 100% correct HERE, Bro!

    CORRECT! BASIC human right!

  7. Johnson Woods

I would like to introduce to you one of the first Mixed-race Personal Listings Service you may find on the Internet! It is created to balck relationships between Black Men and White Women. This will also serve as a forum for all BM and WW to meet, share, and grow together. As stated in simple terms, this group will serve to provide support, interact, online resource, and up coming events. http://www.interracialfriends.com/

Chef said: U know y’all, it’s shit like this [& the sexual genetics piece] that makes dudes like me become Separatists.

Denise Said: If people become separatists then mixed race people will not exist, and inequality will continue to grow. We already had separatism in this country, it was called Jim Crow. Keke is getting what she craves…. ATTENTION. Remember this is the same chick that stabbed her husband. She only has one hit record, and if she was not starving for attention she would not make such atrocious comments. Come on, do you really want this woman to represent mixed race people, what is next Flavor Flav. representing black people.

If all black people become pissed and said: “look at what these mixed folks are doing and saying about us,this is why we should stick to our own races”. Do you know what will happen, there will be no more mixed race people, because you know that most blacks are sensitive,it does not take much to cause blacks to turn on us in favor of racial purity. Keke is a great singer but a misguided young woman, just look at her mother and read the things that she said about her and you will know where she get her theories from.

If Keke was for the mixed race movement, then why is she not making mixed race babies. Keke is talking about having children with a black man, she is trying to cancel out her mixed race roots, she is not carrying them on. You all are rooting for this chick, SMH.

  9. Janise

Keke: Beautiful girl … but what a mixed-up multiracial fool. I sentence her to two weeks at her local library. It’s time to get that pretty head educated, honey chile!

Janise, you are a black monoracial fool.

Maybe you (Janise) should stick to ebony.com or JetMagazine.com?

  11. Randi

Denise, the best thing blacks can do is ignore people like Keke and let her people buy her CDs. She’s going nowhere fast coming from such ignorant stock. Good thing that information was revealed before her CD dropped. Never support any of her projects, let them do it!

  12. Joseph

You know, alot of black albumns are supported by their white customers, so I do not think black people not supporting her albumn will hurt her. 😉 Let that cook for a bit.

  13. Randi

Go check out her fan club here:
    http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/ketarakekewyatt/

Keke’s base will never return so hopefully whites will “eventually” take up the slack. That’s on them but the evidence speaks for itself. She only appears at small local venues with very thin crowds these days. I guess that’s why she shows up 2 hours late hoping they leave so she can avoid further embarrassment. I guarantee the few remaining fans will abandon her before it’s all said and done. Her timing was perfect to showcase that well-known ignorance and that of her mother’s. Somehow I doubt anyone will take notice of her now, and she’s knows it.

  14. Chance

If Keke puts out a good album or song that is a hit they blacks will still listen to her. Look at R. Kelly and his having sex with an under age girl problem blacks still come to him, and people though R. Kelly’s career was over here is very popular.

  15. Cee Cee

The reason why this “mixed race” thing wont work is because we live in a society where people are going to identify you with what you look like. Tiger Woods was a perfect example. White folks could gave a damn about his mother being asian…They still tied him to a tree and called him nigger! They still make racial comments when he plays golf, so in the end if you look like a negro, thats what people are going to call you.

  16. Joseph

Cee Cee, fortunately you’re wrong because there have been Mulatto communities in the past and Creole communities and they worked.

  17. Randi

Cee Cee, I could really care less how whites view biracials and I do agree with your perspective. It’ll be a great day when they splinter off and I don’t buy their drivel that’s it’s black folks keeping them in the fold. What on earth can we do about them moving along? NOTHING. Blacks should never cling to biracials. I see no reason to whatsoever. What’s interesting is a black father in California ran to the NAACP when his mixed son was killed in a racial attack. I heard Tiger did the same thing when he felt discrimination at Stanford. As blacks the best thing we can do to assist others to view biracials “separately” is to direct them to sites such as this one to prove the visceral disdain the overwhelming majority of them hold for blacks. This assistance will go a long way in severing relations IMO. I ALWAYS correct blacks who say “they’re black anyway”. Learn how they feel and see if you don’t come away with a different consciousness. Visit as many of their sites as possible and delve into their collective psyche to see what I mean. I’m compiling a list to distribute amongst those who still don’t have a real grasp of how these people disparage and despise blacks. It’s time we start this process in earnest.

    My response:
Blacks do force mixed race people who are biracial (FGM) and MGM (multi generational mix) into staying in the black race. By always telling them you are just black, yes you are mixed but still just black. Blacks tell them that one drop of black blood makes you black. Scence easly proves that one drop of black blood or one drop of any blood does not make you a member of that race. Many white Americans, Mediterranean European whites like southern Italian, Spaniards, southern French, Sicily, Malta, Corsica, and Sardinia have people with some black ancestry in their genes DNA has already proven that these Mediterranean whites have sub Saharan African DNA markers (mixed with black).

Randi wrote: What’s interesting is a black father in California ran to the NAACP when his mixed son was killed in a racial attack. I heard Tiger did the same thing when he felt discrimination at Stanford.

    My response:
W.E.B. Dubois was considered a mulatto and he helped start The NAACP. Marcus Garvey was a rival to Dubois, one day Garvey went to the headquaters of the NAACp and whne he went inside he saw all kinds of mulattoes working there. Garvey said it is the National association for the advancement of certain people. He felt that too many mulattoes were working there. He saw quadroon looking mulattoes in there working.

So the black father and Tiger Woods were justified because mulattoes like Dubois help found (start) the organization. And many mulattoes worked there when it first opened.

My response: Even if blacks visit these forums, blogs, and websites they still will not change their minds and decide to let or help mixed race people create a third category called mixed race. You know why? Because blacks view mixed looking people as value, good looking, intelligent, sexually attracted to mixed race phenotypes (and there is nothing wrong with being attracted to a certain phenotype), and make the black race look good. So the majority of blacks would never be persuaded even with a list of websites, blogs, and forums that support mixed race people.

    My response:
So you are compiling a little list, just make sure that who ever is on it fits the description of so called hate towards blacks, but this site s not one of them. This site is a site that allows commenters to comment on many topics. Mixed race and mulattoism are just some of those many topics here. There are politics, economics, culture, religion, genetics, etc this is not an anti black website. More blacks need to study their own ancestral backgrounds and that will help make them more open mined towards mixed race people who prefer to self identify as mixed race.

  19. Randi

@Chance, I’m sorry to burst your bubble but any black person with eyes and their “own” intelligence know that biracials run the “entire” gambit as far and their outer appearance, morals and intelligence so I don’t buy this argument one bit. The VAST majority of blacks have few clues how despised they are by your people and it’ll go a long way towards severing the connection between our communities once this goes mainstream. I also suspect at some point blacks are going to have an epiphany just like I did.

Some open and fair-minded biracials have even spoken of their own fathers feeling “inferior” to them, and how their white mothers do not want them to “resist” racism from whites. Some also discuss the disappointment/sadness these black men feel knowing their offspring want nothing to do with them, but notice the extreme eagerness to befriend any race as long as it’s not black.

Phenotype is pretty much all that matters to many of you and is considered a currency of sorts. I’m sorry but I have eyes too. Biracials are no different when it comes to substance abuse, parental abandonment (high numbers are turning up in foster care), mental illnesses, depression and illegitimate pregnancies from what I “know”. Sure some folks might consider biracials trophies, but certainly not all. There’s resentment in your community because blacks are your lifeblood, but we don’t need you to create more blacks. Some of you have already speculated on what will happen if blacks ever woke up to your true nature because you don’t reproduce as much with your own for some reason. I look forward to the day when you can focus “strictly” on your own people and I’m committed to making it a reality for you.

    (Yours in the struggle)

  20. Curious...

@ Randi: You said “Visit as many of their sites as possible and delve into their collective psyche to see what I mean.”

What I’d like to know is why are YOU so INTERESTED in “their collective psyche”? Why do you care so much about the collective psyche of Mixed-Race people?
