Stereotypes And Society

Stereotypes and society

By Chance Kelsey, chancellorfiles.com

Stereotypes are nothing new they are as old as human civilization itself. Stereotypes can be positive or negative example black men are good at sports in general or women are bad drivers.
It is a fact, that black men in general are good at sports is this a stereotype that is published in society? Yes it is. Is it true based upon observation of black athletes? Yes it is true. Blacks’ being good at sports is a stereotype that is, neither good nor bad, it is a neutral stereotype.

Stereotypes That Are True

White people as a collective are very intellectually gifted and intelligent (whites who are descendants of Europe and white Europeans who live in Europe). Is this a stereotype yes, and it is in general true. This is a positive stereotype. Italians clothing designers make some good suits for men. Germans have reputation of making the greatest tasting beers in the world. Black Americans have a reputation of fighting against injustices and racism in America, and are very successful at fighting against it. This is true. Mixed race people who have some black ancestry but are mixed with white and other ethnic groups have often been the leaders of black Americans, and have contributed intellectually, educationally, economically, and politically to black America and America in general. This true.

Eastern Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc) have a reputation of perfecting technologies that have been created by other racial groups. The American Henry Ford created the car, but the Japanese have currently for the last 30 years been making a better cars that many Americans buy and prefer over American made cars. The Japanese have also improved many other technologies that were created in other countries like televisions, computers, laptops, refrigerators, etc does mean that Asian make better technologies all the time no.
It means that they often improve in technology that has been created and discovered by ethnic groups from other countries. This improving is a back and forth process because sometimes Asians have improved on a piece of equipment or technology, and years later a non Asian country creates a better product. All of the examples above are based upon truth.

Jewish people as a collective are good and talented at making money and creating businesses. This is true. Throughout history where ever Jewish people have traveled, stayed, and lived (countries) they have been a financial, educational, intellectual, and political blessing to the countries they lived in.
Stereotypes are not based upon the individual but are based upon the group. Stereotypes disregards and does not allow the individual uniqueness of a person to be taken into consideration but paints all members of that group with the same brush.

In some cases certain stereotypes make members of another group feel superior to members of another group. In life a stereotype can be embedded in a variety of things like a single word or phrase, combination of words, an image that is associated with that group by way of habits, behavior (positive or negative) or body language, or a picture. When people see a particular image that image is easily recognized and understood by those who share the same views.

If you want to be seen as an individual then people would have to get to know you personally first, and by knowing you personally this removes the stereotype if the stereotype is negative.

Sometimes change whether it is positive or negative, and that is the result of a change in the group that the stereotype was about.
There are certain negative stereotypes that are true too.

Stereotypes can appear in the media because of the biases of writers, directors, producers, reporters and editors. But at the same time stereotypes can also be useful to the media because they provide a quick identity for a person or group that is easily recognized by an audience. When deadlines loom, it’s sometimes faster and easier to use a stereotype to characterize a person or situation, than it is to provide a more complex explanation.
Stereotypes are only a problem when they are false, whether the stereotype is positive or negative if it is false, it creates a distorted image for the group that the stereotyped is aimed at.

How do you determine which ones are true and which ones are false?

Elle Wrote: How do you determine which ones are true and which ones are false?

My response: By rational observations meaning simple observations based upon the same situations and circumstances that produce the majority of the times the same results (effects) over and over again.

Discussions of racism often focus only myths and stereotypes of people of color while ignoring the counter-myths of whiteness and white privilege. For example, in academic literature the myth/stereotype that black parents don’t care about their kids education has been explored in detail, but the unexplored counter notion that white families do care about their kids education is not explored. It is taken for granted. Moreover, whites are often held as the standard or the norm, and consequently, they are not seen as racialized people.

Whites as a collective don’t have the same degree of social ills holding them back, and blacks do. Whites are seen as the normal standard (measuring stick) because they are the majority in the country and hold most of the power socially, politically, economically, and military.

The whites are not seen as racialized because they are the majority, and are not under pressure to the same degree to protect themselves because they are the majority. On top of that they allow their people to be free thinkers without intimidating them and causes whites to feel a lesser need to become racialized.

    To Chance

James Shelton, talks about you all the time and your articles. This site has become a really distraction for him and i would like to say thanks.

In some sense i do admire what you are doing, creating a discussion on a subject that the Americans are refusing to address.

From readin your articles, i understand you wanting to disassociate yourslef from the black race. most crime that are reported on tv, most often, 9/10 cases the criminals are Blacks. if i where in your shoes i would probably be going the same.

But what you are forgeting is that other ethnic group does the same, i have been told that hispanics in the US are in the same boat.
The fact people of colour commit crimes doesnt mean that they do so because they are blacks or hispanic, rather because of their socio-econonic status.

There are so many things in the about the black race to be proud, when i have children i would teach them to be proud of that, but off course my white English culture will be there as well. i would be very disappointed if they choose to identify only with their black culture.

Mix race also face the same injustice as black in the UK? as for the USA i cant say.

i have alway considered mulattoes black with white heritage, i see james as a black man with india heritage.

I must say, why not a white man with black heritage or an indian with indian heritage? To me it all points back to being under the sway of the ODR, but we are all entitled to our opinions. I like to think of myself as a Mulatto with black and white heritage. 🙂

*should be an indian with black heritage. 😉

I try my best o write about topics that some will not touch on.

I see where you are coming from. But most people with mix heritage often share phenotype with Black Africans rather than with White Europeans.

As a person who have visited in African several times (West African) you would be surprise at the diversity of looks you come across African.

There are the fulanis, woodaabes hausas, tuareg, ibo, edo and Kanuri, ouaadain people in Nigeria, just lookin fat there external appearence one would think that they are mix, but they are not. thay are black Africans.

Blacks comes in different shades, and mulattoes happened to be one shade of blacks, the differences in is that unlike most blacks, mulattoes are have white heritage.

In the case of James, there is no way anyone would look at James (even thou in some ways you can tell he is mix) that he is indian. The same principles applies to other mix as well as mulattoes.

Mariah Carey and Wentworth Miller are exception to this principles, because both have one white parent and one mix race Parent (in the case of Miller, his dad has a white heritage, which explain there European features.

Accord to Chances theory, looking at their phenotype they would be class as White.

My response: Some of these African tribes have distance Arab and white ancestry and that is why they look the way they do. Now some blacks in certain tribes are not mixed and some have distant Arab and white ancestry this is a known fact.

Yes you have Africans of various shades but some look the way they look because of distant mixing with whites Arabs, and people from India. And look look mixed but are not mixed.

On top of that there are mulattoes and coloreds in those countries and tribes and many of the blacks in those countries call them by a different name. And do not consider them black.

My response: If mulattoes are a shade of black then they are a shade of white and on top of that they are a shade of what ever racial group they are mixed with, not just the black one. Some mulattoes are mixed with other ethnic groups.

My response: Yes these two would be classified as white, and on top of that there are people born to two black identified parents and these people come out looking white, mestizo Latino, or Asian etc. And they often switch to identifying white after high school.
